PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To suppress deterioration in a hydrogen storage alloy with a crystal structure other than a CaCu5 type caused by charging-discharging in an alkaline storage battery using the hydrogen storage alloy as the negative electrode, and to improve the cycle life in the alkaline storage battery.
SOLUTION : The hydrogen storage alloy for an alkaline storage battery at least comprises rare earth elements, magnesium, nickel and aluminum, and in which, in X-ray diffraction measurement using a Cu-Kα ray as an X-ray source, the intensity ratio between the highest peak intensity IA appearing in the range of 2[!theta!]=32 to 33° and the highest peak intensity IB appearing in the range of 2[!theta!]=35 to 36° is ≥1.00. In the alkaline storage battery provided with a positive electrode 1, a negative electrode 2 using a hydrogen storage alloy and an alkali electrolytic solution, as the hydrogen storage alloy in the negative electrode, the above hydrogen storage alloy for an alkaline storage battery is used.
