PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To obtain a perovskite type compound oxide useful as a catalyst material, having a large specific surface area and containing active metal species in the state of solid solution. SOLUTION : The perovskite type compound oxide containing at least one of the rare earth elements and at least one of the transition metal elements is a noble metal element-containing perovskite type compound oxide containing a noble metal element in its crystals and having a BET specific surface area of >10 m2/g. This perovskite type compound oxide can be manufactured as follows; when a precursor material containing at least one of the rare earth elements and at least one of the transition metal elements is heat-treated to form a perovskite type compound oxide phase, a powdery amorphous material is used as the precursor material and a noble metal element is incorporated into the amorphous material.
