PURPOSE : To obtain a hydrogen storage alloy for battery having high electrode capacitance, long life characteristic, and superior rising characteristic by specifying a composition consisting of rare earth elements, Ni, Mn, Co, etc., and also forming a specific columnar crystal structure. CONSTITUTION : In an alloy represented by a general formula ANiaMnbMc (where A means rare earth elements including Y, M means Co, Al, Fe, Si, Cr, Cu, Ti, Zr, Zn, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Mo, W, Ag, Pd, B, Ga, In, Ge, and Sn, 3.5=50% and also it is preferable to regulate the average minor axis of the columnar crystals to =1800 deg.C/sec cooling rate. By using this alloy as negative electrode and an Ni oxide as positive electrode, together with alkaline electrolyte, an Ni-hydrogen secondary battery can be formed.
