Aliphatic alpha, omega-aminonitriles are prepared by partially hydrogenating aliphatic alpha, omega-dinitriles at an increased temperature and pressure in the presence of a solvent and a catalyst. The catalyst contains (a) a compound based on a metal selected from the group made up of nickel, cobalt, iron, ruthenium and rhodium; (b) 0.01 to 25 % by weight in relation to (a) of a promoter based on a metal selected from the group comprising of palladium, platinum, iridiu m, osmium, copper, silver, gold, chromium, molybdenum. tungsten, manganese, rhenium, zinc, cadmium, lead, aluminium, tin, phosphoru s, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, silicium, titanium, zirconium and rare earth metals; and (c) 0 to 5 % by weight in relation to (a) of a compound based on an alkaline or alkaline-earth metal, provided that component (a) not be based on iron or iron and a metal selected from th e group comprising cobalt, ruthenium and rhodium when (b) is a promoter based on a metal selected from the group comprising titanium, manganese, chromium and molybdenum. Moreover, when component (a) is a compound based only on ruthenium or on rhodium, ruthenium and rhodium, or nickel and rhodium, promoter (b) may be dispensed with.
