Separating uranium(VI) from actinides(IV) and other actinides(VI) comprises contacting a water-immiscible organic phase containing the uranium and actinides with an acidic aqueous solution containing a defective heteropolyanion and if necessary a reducing agent capable of selectively reducing actinides(VI), and separating the organic phase from the aqueous solution.
