PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an inexpensive optical waveguide as an optical device used for optical communication system.
SOLUTION : The optical waveguide is composed of a lower clad layer 2 made of a glass material, a core 3 formed on the lower clad layer 2 and made of a glass material, and an upper clad layer 4 formed so as to cover the core 3 and made of at least one kind of element among the alkaline elements, alkaline earth elements and rare earth elements. In this optical waveguide, a softening point in the lower clad layer is set to be higher by ≥50°C than that in the upper clad layer 4, so that only the upper clad layer 4 can be softened without softening the lower clad layer 2. Consequently, lowering of the yield through deformation of the lower clad layer 2 can be prevented to make the optical waveguide available at low cost.
