PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a manufacturing method of a luminous body which emits luminescence within the visible region and comprises silica glass as a body and a rare-earth element as a luminescence center, and the luminous body manufactured using the method.
SOLUTION : The manufacturing method is a sol-gel process for manufacturing the luminous body comprising silica glass as the body and the rare-earth element as the luminescence center. The method comprises a hydrolysis step wherein an organometallic compound of silicon is hydrolyzed, a colloidal solution-forming step wherein a hydrolysate obtained through the hydrolysis step is converted into a colloidal solution, a step wherein the rare-earth element is added, a wet silica gel-forming step wherein the colloidal solution is converted into a wet silica gel, a dry silica gel-forming step wherein the wet silica gel is converted into a dry silica gel and a burning step wherein the dry silica gel is burned. The luminous body manufactured using the method efficiently yields luminescence within the visible region such as red, blue and green when excited by an external light such as ultraviolet rays.
