PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a manufacturing process of a rare earth-activated metal aluminate-based phosphor which has an excitation band in the near ultraviolet region of wavelengths of around 400 nm and emits light highly efficiently.SOLUTION : The manufacturing process is to manufacture a rare earth-activated metal aluminate-based phosphor expressed as MmLnAl2O4 (wherein, M is an alkaline earth metal; L is a rare earth metal; m+n=1 and m?n), and comprises using MCO3, a rare earth metal oxide and Al2O3 for raw materials, mixing these materials and firing the mixture in an atmosphere of ≥1, 000°C. The obtained MmLnAl2O4 has an excitation band in the near ultraviolet region of around 400 nm and a central emission wavelength of around 500 nm (violet-green). The MmLnAl2O4 obtained by this process is a violet-green phosphor emitting violet-green light excited by near ultraviolet radiation. The violet-green phosphor MmLnAl2O4 is easily mass-produced by firing in the atmosphere.
