PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To make NOx harmless by decomposing it into N2 and CO2 by using a general metal carbide as a NOx-reducing agent, whereas a conventional NOx removal method utilizes a catalytic reaction of a rare metal or a noble metal.
SOLUTION : An interstitial metal carbide of Mn, Fe, Cr, Ni, Co, or the like, a compound metal carbide or a mixture of a binary, ternary, or quaternary alloy of these metals, or a composition prepared by incorporating carbon into one of the forgoing materials is used as a NOx-reducing agent; thereby, NOx in an exhaust gas is directly reduced and decomposed at a low temperature. Though the replacement and renewal per fixed term is necessary, the cost of this NOx removal method is lower than that of a conventional catalytic reaction.
