PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide cerium oxide in which the content of coarse particles is extremely low, and to provide a production method capable of easily producing the same. SOLUTION : The cerium oxide is produced by performing : an immersion heat treatment stage where cerium carbonate in which the ratio of cerium oxide in the converted total rare earth oxide (CeO2/TREO) is ≥90% is immersed into an aqueous solution and is heated, or a wet heat treatment stage where the cerium carbonate is subjected to humidification-heating pulverization where the cerium carbonate is heated in an atmosphere with a relative humidity of ≥80% to obtain cerium monooxycarbonate; and a drying stage where the cerium monooxycarbonate is dried at 130 to 250°C to obtain cerium oxide. In these stages, the cerium oxide in which the content of coarse particles is low is produced.
