PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a hydrogen storage alloy having both a lowered hydrogen desorption temperature and an enhanced hydrogen storage capacity.
SOLUTION : This manufacturing method comprises mixing hydride of Mg and a hydride of an RE (rare earth element) so as to make a desired composition; charging them into a cubic anvil-type ultrahigh-pressure synthesis apparatus; and synthesizing the hydrogen storage alloy from them through a solid phase reaction under an environment of such an ultrahigh pressure as 2 GPa or higher and such a high temperature as 1, 000 K or higher. The obtained hydrogen storage alloy is a Mg-RE-based alloy, has a tetragonal structure for the crystal structure of the hydride, and has a hydrogen desorption temperature lowered by about 50 K.
