PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a metal-halide lamp preferable for a vehicle headlamp, capable of suppressing swelling of an air tight container of quarts glass, which would occur when being lighted for a long period of time, by encapsulating an appropriate range of Cs halides and maintaining light emitting efficiency at a relatively higher value, and to provide a lighting system using it. SOLUTION : The metal-halide lamp comprises the air-tight container 1, a pair of electrodes 1b, 1b, encapsulated in the inside of the air-tight container 1, opposingly to each other with an interval, a discharge medium containing at least one kind of metal selected from Na, Sc, and a halogen compound containing Na, Sc, and a rare earth meal group, a halogen compound having a unit volume per air tight container 1 of 0.001-0.015 mg/mm3, and a rare gas of 8 atmosphere or larger at 25°C. The calorific amount in the discharge space at stable operation is 50 W/cm2 or higher.
