PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an alkaline storage battery with high capacity, using an hydrogen storage alloy containing rare earth elements, Mg, Ni, and Al, of which the ratio of maximum peak strength IA appearing within a range of 2[!theta!]=31°to 33° at an X-ray diffraction measurement using Cu-Kα-ray as an X-ray source, to the maximum peak strength IB appearing within a range of 2[!theta!]=40°to 44°; IA/IB is not less than 0.1, in which the hydrogen storage alloy is restrained from reaction with alkaline electrolytic solution, capable of obtaining a sufficient cycle life.
SOLUTION : A substance formed by oxidizing the surface of the hydrogen storage alloy containing at least rare earth elements, Mg, Ni, and Al, of which the ratio of maximum peak strength IA appearing within a range of 2[!theta!]=31°to 33° at an X-ray diffraction measurement using Cu-Kα-ray as an X-ray source, to the maximum peak strength IB appearing within a range of 2[!theta!]=40°to 44°; IA/IB is not less than 0.1, is used as a negative electrode of the alkaline storage battery.
