A europium-activated oxide phosphor comprises gadolinium, yttrium, lanthanum, aluminum, gallium and indium. The phosphor absorbs ultraviolet (UV) radiation and emits in visible wavelength range of 580-770 nm. The europium is contained in an amount of 0.0005-20 mol%, and the phosphor is capable of absorbing at least 80% of exciting UV radiation at wavelength of 254 nm. - A europium-activated oxide phosphor comprises a compound of formula (I). - (Gd1-x-yYxLay) (Al1-z-vGazInv)O3 : Eu3+ (I) - x, y, z, v, x+y and z+v = 0-1. - The phosphor is capable of absorbing ultraviolet (UV) radiation and emitting in a visible wavelength range of 580-770 nm. The europium is contained in an amount of 0.0005-20 mol%, and the phosphor is capable of absorbing at least 80% of exciting UV radiation at a wavelength of 254 nm. - Independent claims are also included for the following : - (1) phosphor blend comprising trivalent europium activated oxide phosphor comprising compound (I); - (2) a light source; and - (3) method for producing a europium-activated rare earth and group IIIB oxide phosphor, trivalent europium activated rare earth and group IIIB oxide phosphor, or trivalent europium-activated gadolinium aluminum oxide phosphor.
