PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an optically active binaphthol metal complex catalyst for attaining satisfiable chemical yield and optical yield in the asymmetric nitroaldol reaction between a straight-chain aldehyde and nitromethane which has been inefficient for conventional such catalysts, and to provide a binaphthol derivative for preparing the catalyst. SOLUTION : The binaphthol derivative is represented by general formula(1r) or (1s). An optical activator or binaphthol rare earth metal complex as the catalyst is also provided. In general formulas(1r) and (1s), R1 is a 1-6C alkyl, 2-6C alkenyl, 7-20C aralkyl or a chain substituent containing 1-3 heteroatoms in a 1-6C alkyl group; R2 is H, a halogen atom, 1-6C alkyl or 1-7C alkoxy group.
