PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To obtain a high pressure discharge lamp emitting white light with high efficiency and high color rendering, having a stable life characteristics with small variation of characteristics depending on the lighting direction, using a ceramic arc tube hardly generating fade-out. SOLUTION : At least rare earth metal halide and sodium halide are filled inside the ceramic arc tube as a filling material, and the weight ratio of neodymium halide contained in the rare earth metal halide against the total quantity of the rare earth metal halide is 1-25%, and the weight ratio of the sodium halide against the rare earth metal halide is 10-50%. The high pressure discharge lamp emits light with correlated color temperature of 5, 000-7, 000K.
