PURPOSE : An electrolyte solution for a nickel hydrogen secondary battery and a nickel hydrogen secondary battery containing the electrolyte solution are provided, to increase the lifetime of batteries, to improve the capacity of electrodes and to simplify the manufacturing process of batteries. CONSTITUTION : The electrolyte solution comprises a solution containing 2-10 M KOH and 0.0002-0.0008 M palladium. Preferably the solution contains 5-8 M KOH and 0.5-1.5 M LiOH·H2O or 5-8 M KOH and 0.5-1.5 M NaOH. The nickel hydrogen secondary battery comprises the electrolyte solution and electrodes. Preferably the negative electrode is made of one material selected from the group consisting of TiFe, ZrMn2, ZrV2, ZrNi2, CaNi5, LaNi5, MmNi5, Mg2Ni and Mg2Cu (wherein Mm is a rare earth metal).
