PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an inexpensive optical waveguide which can prevent degradation in yield and a method for manufacturing the same. SOLUTION : To provide an inexpensive optical waveguide which can prevent the degradation in yield and a method for manufacturing the same. The optical waveguide consists of a lower clad layer 2 composed of a glass material, a core section 3 composed of a glass material to be formed on the lower clad layer 2, and an upper clad layer 4 composed of at least one element among an alkaline element, alkaline earth element and rare earth element formed so as to cover the core section 3 and is made higher in the softening temperature of the lower clad layer 2 than the softening temperature of the upper clad layer 4. Only the upper clad layer 4 can be softened without softening the lower clad layer 2 and therefore the prevention of the degradation in the yield by the deformation of the lower clad layer 2 is made possible and the inexpensive optical waveguide can be provided.
