Solid compositions comprising, wholly or partly, a mixed oxide containing zirconium, a rare earth and a metal other than zirconium and a rare earth, and the mixed oxyhydride derived from it. The solid composition conforms to the formula (I) : - TZraMbOx : - in which T is a rare earth of rare earth mixture ; a = 0.1 - 1 ; M is a metallic element. or mixture. differing from Zr and rare earths ; b = 0.01 - 5 ; and x = 2 - 11. Independent claims are also included for the preparation of the composition and oxyhydrides derived from the compositions.
