Discharge medium of the lamp contains halides of sodium, scandium, rare earth metal, xenon under pressure of more than three atmospheres. The lamp satisfies specified condition relating the amount of halides (H) adhering to electrodes and inner volume (C) of air tight vessel after turning-off lamp and ratio of maximum lamp power (R) during starting operation to its stable operation. Independent claims are also included for : (a) metal halide lamp operating device; and (b) head lamp device for automobiles.
