PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an R-T-B based sintered magnet which is low cost and enables the increase in residual magnetic flux density and coercive force.
SOLUTION : An R-T-B based sintered magnet 1 comprises R2T14B crystal as primary-phase grains 11 and grain boundaries 12, where R represents one or more kinds of rare earth elements, T represents one or more kinds of transition metal elements, including Fe or Fe and Co as an essential element, and B represents boron. The R-T-B based sintered magnet 1 has a magnet surface layer portion 1a, and a magnet center portion 1b located on an inner side of the magnet surface layer portion. A crystal orientation degree of the primary-phase grains 11 in the magnet surface layer portion 1a having a magnetic pole face is lower than a crystal orientation degree of the primary-phase grains 11 in the magnet center portion 1b.
