PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an excellent oxygen occluding material which can be obtained by forming a co-precipitation material from cerium and at least one second metal M1, finally drying and calcining the co-precipitation material to form an oxide particle mixture (a Ce/M1 oxide particle mixture) from cerium and the second metal M1. SOLUTION : The oxygen occluding material is characterized by forming the Ce/M1 oxide particle mixture from cerium oxide and the second metal oxide and contains cerium oxide and at least one kind of oxide of the second metal M1 chosen from a group composed of alkaline earth metal, rare-earth metal, zirconium, zinc, cobalt, copper and manganese.
