PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a rare earth organosol produced by stably dispersing rare earth fine particles in an organic solvent and to provide a rare earth organosol precursor that can produce a sol by dispersing the precursor in an organic solvent.
SOLUTION : The rare earth organosol comprises fine particles comprising a rare earth element as the main component, a hydroxycarboxylic acid and a stabilizer. The rare earth organosol precursor can produce an organosol when dispersed in an organic solvent. A method for producing a rare earth organosol includes a step of preparing a mixture liquid which comprises fine particles comprising a rare earth element as the main component, a hydroxycarboxylic acid and a stabilizer in the presence of water and a step of subjecting the acquired mixture liquid to solvent substitution to produce an organosol. In the rare earth organosol, the rare earth is one or more kinds of elements selected from Sc, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu and the like; the hydroxycarboxylic acid is one or more kinds of acids selected from malic acid, tartaric acid and the like; and the stabilizer is one or more kinds selected from an amine salt type cationic surfactant and the like.
