PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a gas sensor element that can detect gas even in a low temperature environment, and a gas sensor.
SOLUTION : In a gas sensor element, an inner electrode has a lamination structure in which a lanthanum zirconate layer 31 having lanthanum zirconate (La2Zr2O7) as a main component and an electrode layer 32 are laminated in order from a side close to an element body 21. The electrode layer 32 contains conductive oxide including a perovskite phase having a perovskite crystal structure and containing La. The lanthanum zirconate layer 31 contains a rare earth element other than a La element; when the ratio of the La element, Zr element, and rare earth element other than the La element contained in the lanthanum zirconate layer 31 are α[mol%], β[mol%], and γ[mol%], respectively, {γ/(α+β+γ)} is 0.100 or more and 0.400 or less.
