PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a gas sensor element in which adhesion between an electrode and a solid electrolyte body is not easily reduced even at high temperature, and a gas sensor.
SOLUTION : A gas sensor element includes a solid electrolyte body 21 containing zirconia, and a pair of electrode layers formed on the solid electrolyte body. At least one of the electrode layers includes a first layer 101, a second layer 103, and a diffusion layer 105. The first layer contains conductive oxide containing a rare earth element X1. The second layer is formed between the first layer and the solid electrolyte body and contains CeO2 doped with a rare earth element X2 other than Ce. The diffusion layer is formed between the second layer and the solid electrolyte body and contains Zr, Ce, the rare earth element X1, and the rare earth element X2.
