PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a permanent magnet which enables the enhancement of magnetic properties including Sm-Co based sintered magnet magnetization and coercive force, and which enables the enhancement of mechanical properties including its strength.SOLUTION : A permanent magnet according to an embodiment comprises a sintered compact having a composition represented by the following composition formula : Rp1Feq1Mr1Cus1Co100-p1-q1-r1-s1 (where R represents at least one kind selected from rare earth elements, and M represents at least one kind selected from Zr, Ti and Hf; and 10≤p1≤13.3, 25≤q1≤40, 0.88≤r1≤5.4 and 3.5≤s1≤13.5 (atom%)). The sintered compact has : crystal grains comprising main phases including Th2Zn17 type crystal phases; and Cu-rich phases having a composition of which the Cu concentration is high, and an average thickness in a range of 0.05-2 μm.
