A process for upgrading a rare earth metal-containing silicate is described ore or ore concentrate, comprising a) mixing the ore or ore concentrate with at least one inorganic fluoride, b is) the thermal treatment at a temperature in the range of 450 °c to 850 °c the resulting mixture, and c) the acidic leach the thermally treated mixture with a leaching agent and d) separation of the resulting rare earth metal-containing leach solution from the solid residue. The method provides improved yield and a reduced silicon content in the leach solution rare earth metals, whereby the acidic leach solution is stabilized. |
