PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a new modification method for increasing a refractive index of a transparent optical material in which a rare earth element is added, to provide an optical device having a high refractive index region in a transparent optical material in which a rare earth element is added, the high refractive index region having a refractive index higher than that of the transparent optical material, and to provide a manufacturing method and a manufacturing apparatus for manufacturing the optical device.
SOLUTION : A transparent optical material in which a rare earth element is added is irradiated with ultrashort pulse laser light to increase the refractive index of the transparent optical material in an irradiated portion. By using the above modification method, such an optical device is manufactured that has a high refractive index region periodically disposed in a transparent optical material in which a rare earth element is added and that the high refractive index region has a refractive index higher than that of the transparent optical material.
