The handle control unit 1 has a outside handle 4, an inside handle 7 and a lock, each of the handles connected to the lock, the outside handle has an electrically driven clutch 10 which can be moved to engage or disengage the handle from the lock and is controlled by an access control unit 5. The clutch may have a magnetic switch, having a pair of primary magnets 23a, 23b arranged so that their fields are parallel to an axis of the handles and a neodymium rare earth magnet 24 in a drum 18 connected to a motor 17. Preferably the access control unit is a wireless RFID card reader. The lock mechanism may be powered by dry cell batteries. A method of operation is also provided. |
