PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for separating a rare earth element and iron good in separability of iron and rare earth element and capable of removing water soluble silica component or the like by water impregnation of generated slag.
SOLUTION : There is provided a method for separating rare earth element and iron by conducting heating melting under oxidation atmosphere to suppress vaporization of an alkali component contained in a flux and form a rare earth-containing slag with SiO2/Na2O molar ratio=2.1 or less in a method for melting a rare earth iron-containing article together with alkali silicate flux in a metal silicon molten body or in iron silicon alloy molten body to form an alkali silicate slag incorporating the rare earth element and separating the rare earth-containing slag from an iron silicon alloy.
