PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide zirconium oxide nanoparticles which are easily stabilized with a rare earth oxide and the like and exhibit good dispersibility in an organic medium.
SOLUTION : There are provided zirconium oxide nanoparticles coated with a first carboxylic acid having 3 or more carbon atoms which is at least one of primary carboxylic acids and secondary carboxylic acids, wherein the zirconium oxide nanoparticles contain yttrium. The zirconium oxide nanoparticles preferably further contain at least one of Al and rare-earth elements (excluding yttrium). The first carboxylic acid preferably is at least one selected from the group consisting of secondary carboxylic acids, carboxylic acids in which carbon atoms except those at the α position are branched and linear carboxylic acids having 4 to 20 carbon atoms.
