PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a multi-core optical fiber and an optical amplifier that are capable of suppressing occurrence of an inter-core gain difference without inputting excitation light to each core, in amplifying propagation light of a multi-core optical fiber.
SOLUTION : In a multi-core optical fiber 91, multiple rare earth ion-added cores 11 are disposed in a first cladding 12. The multi-core optical fiber includes a second cladding 13 that is disposed around the first cladding 12 and reflects excitation light having a wavelength at which a rare earth ion is excited. The multiple cores 11 have an inter-core distance therebetween at which propagation light beams are coupled together.
