A permanent magnet electric motor is provided with an annular stator core 1a, a rotor core 2a, and a rotational position detection sensor 7. A rare-earth magnet 2c and a ferrite magnet 2d are arranged adjacent to each other in the axial direction of the rotor core 2a in each of a plurality of magnet insertion holes 2b. The axial length of the rotor core 2a is longer than the axial length of the stator core 1a. The rare-earth magnet 2c is arranged in each of the plurality of magnet insertion holes 2b so as to face the stator core 1a in the radial direction of the stator core 1a. The ferrite magnet 2d arranged in each of the plurality of magnet insertion holes 2b is arranged between the rotational position detection sensor 7 and rare-earth magnets 2c arranged in corresponding magnet insertion holes 2b among the plurality of magnet insertion holes 2b. |
