PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for producing silicon nitride ceramic capable of producing a silicon nitride ceramics capable of producing a dense silicon nitride ceramic more expensively than the conventional case, and a silicon nitride ceramic produced by the production method.
SOLUTION : Provided is a method for producing a silicon nitride ceramic comprising : a first step where the surfaces of silicon particles are coated with at least one kind selected from the group consisting of rare earth oxide particles, typical metal oxide particles and transition metal oxide particles to form composite particles in which the covering ratio of the silicon particles by at least one kind selected from the group consisting of the rare earth oxide particles, the typical metal oxide particles and the transition metal oxide particles is 1% or more; a second step where the molding body made of the composite particles is molded; a third step where the molded body is fired in a nitrogen atmosphere to nitride the molded body; and a fourth step where the nitrided molded body is made dense.
