PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for separating rare earth elements and iron from a raw material including the rare earth elements and the iron in an efficient and inexpensive manner.
SOLUTION : There is provided a method for separating rare earth elements and iron from a raw material including the rare earth elements and the iron. The method includes a melting step of reacting the rare earth elements and the iron contained in the raw material with alkali metal respectively in a melt of alkali metal hydroxide to generate a complex oxide of alkali metal and rare earth element and a complex oxide of alkali metal and iron. The method includes an acid leaching step of making a calcined object including the complex oxide obtained in the melting step into a slurry to soak the slurry in an acid to leach out rare earth elements, remaining the iron content in the slurry.
