This nickel hydrogen secondary battery (2) comprises an electrode group (22) together with an alkaline electrolyte solution, said electrode group (22) being composed of a positive electrode (24) and a negative electrode (26), which are superposed on each other with a separator (28) being interposed therebetween. This battery (2) contains Li, and the total amount of Li in the battery (2) is 15-50 mg/Ah, if determined as a mass in terms of LiOH per 1 Ah of the positive electrode capacity. The negative electrode (26) contains particles of a rare earth-Mg-Ni system hydrogen storage alloy that contains a rare earth element, Mg and Ni. Each hydrogen storage alloy particle (44) has a rare earth hydroxide (50), which is a hydroxide of the rare earth element, on the surface, while having a specific surface area of 0.1-0.5 m2/g. |
