PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a broadband light source having broadband and high output in a 1.7 μm band.
SOLUTION : In a broadband light source configured to couple the light from a superluminescent diode (SLD)1 to an amplifier using an optical fiber 3, and to output the light from the amplifier, the optical fiber is added with a rare earth element or a transition metal having a laser transition level in a core or a clad thereof, and the broadband light source has an excitation light source 4 which generates the exciting light for exciting the optical fiber, and an optical component 5 for coupling the light from the exciting light to the optical fiber.
