PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a metallic absorbable stent which can prevent fragmentation and with which relatively large radioactive-markers are less likely to migrate from an implantation site and cause emboli in blood vessels.
SOLUTION : A bioabsorbable implant comprises : an elongated metallic element comprising 80% by weight or more of a metal selected from the group consisting of magnesium, iron, zinc, and manganese, and combinations thereof and being substantially free of rare earth metals, the elongated metallic element defining at least a portion of the bioabsorbable implant. The metal has a columnar microstructure including one or more columnar crystals extending substantially for the entire length of the implant, the one or more columnar crystals each having an average grain length of at least 1 mm and an average grain diameter of less than 0.2 mm. The metal is configured to exhibit enhanced strength and physical integrity after implantation.
