PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a blood sample processing method that improves a recovery rate of small rare cells and rare cells which easily escape by being deformed, while suppressing a filtration area of a filter, and that recovers the cells in a living state.
SOLUTION : A method for separating or detecting rare cells in a blood sample includes the step of separating or detecting the rare cells by filter processing a blood sample of a capacity equal to or less than 6 μl per hole with respect to a filter hole, by using a filter comprising elliptical holes whose minor axis diameter is 3.0 μm to 15 μm and whose major axis diameter is 1.1 to 3 times as long as the minor axis diameter, or holes containing the ellipse and having a shape in which at least two points sandwiching the ellipse and the major axis of the ellipse come into contact, at a hole density of at least 200 holes per mm2 to 40000 holes per mm2, according to one aspect.
