PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a transparent ceramic garnet scintillator detector that may be useful particularly for positron emission tomography (PET).
SOLUTION : A method of forming a transparent ceramic garnet scintillator includes : forming powder having a composition of a formula AhBiCjO12, where h is 3±10%, i is 2±10%, j is 3±10%, A includes one or more rare earth elements, B includes aluminum and/or gallium, and C includes aluminum and/or gallium; adding at least one aliovalent dopant to the powder; and consolidating the powder to form an optically transparent ceramic; where the at least one aliovalent dopant is divalent and selected from a group consisting of Sr2+, Ba2+ and combinations thereof.
