简介 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method of manufacturing rare earth element-addition optical fiber preform which is suitable for the addition of a rare earth element in high concentration, and is simple and inexpensive. SOLUTION : The method of manufacturing the rare earth element-addition optical fiber preform includes : a synthetic step of synthesizing a porous preform which is a silica based glass fine particle deposit formed by adding aluminum by a gas phase synthesis and having bulk density in the diameter direction which is smaller than in the surface is smaller than that in the center part; a removing step of removing a prescribed quantity of a low density part lower than the prescribed value from the surface of the synthesized porous preform; an impregnation step of adding the rare earth element into the porous preform from which the low density part is removed by a solution impregnation method; a drying step of drying the porous preform into which the rare earth element is added; and a dehydration and sintering step of dehydrating and sintering the dried porous preform.
