PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an organic EL element capable of both reducing the reflection of external light and reducing the loss of light emitted from a luminescent layer without using an element having a mechanical structure requiring special fine-processing technology.
SOLUTION : A luminescent layer 3a present between a reflection electrode 1 and a transparent electrode 2 comprises a circular-polarization luminous rare earth complex emitting light consisting of circular-polarization light gyrating in a prescribed direction. A λ/4 plate 5 and a linear-polarization plate 6 are disposed oppositely to the transparent electrode 2 in order from the transparent electrode 2 side. The vibration direction of a linear-polarization light which the linear-polarization plate 6 transmits is directed in a direction which matches the vibration direction of a linear-polarization light obtained from the circular-polarization light emitted from the luminescent layer 3a by converting it by λ/4.
