PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a hydrogen storage alloy having improved hydrogen absorbing/desorbing properties, and a secondary battery using the hydrogen storage alloy as an anode.
SOLUTION : A hydrogen storage alloy is produced by a casting method or a sintering method and comprises an alloy ingot having a composition represented by the following general formula (1) or a pulverized product of the alloy ingot : (Mg1-a-bR1aM1b)Niz (1), (wherein, R1 represents at least one element selected from rare earth elements including Y; M1 represents at least one selected from elements having a larger electronegativity than that of Mg, other than the element of R1, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu and Zn; and (a), b and z satisfy 0.1≤a≤0.8, 00, and 3≤z≤3.8, respectively).
