PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for simply separating rare earth elements from a composition having a plurality of kinds of rare earth elements mixed therein with a high separation ratio, and an apparatus for separation for achieving the method.
SOLUTION : A method for separating rare earth elements is a method for separating a plurality of kinds of rare earth elements and has : a first heat treatment step to generate a plurality of kinds of rare earth chlorides from a starting mixture including a plurality of kinds of rare earth oxides and ammonium chloride; a second heat treatment step to generate a chloride/oxychloride mixture including rare earth chlorides of rare earth elements of group 1 and rare earth oxy-chlorides of rare earth elements of group 2 from the plurality of kinds of rare earth chlorides; a selective chloride extraction step to extract the rare earth chlorides in a liquid phase by pouring the chloride/oxychloride mixture into a solvent and selectively dissolving the rare earth chlorides in the solvent; and a separation step to separate the rare earth elements of group 1 and the rare earth elements of group 2 by conducting solid liquid separation of the chloride-extracted liquid phase and a solid phase which is the residual rare earth oxy-chlorides.
