PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a coating fluid for use in the formation of an electron transporting layer capable of manufacturing an organic EL element, which can be driven with a low voltage, by a simple method that uses a small number of materials and does not need such heat treatment at high temperatures as has an adverse effect on a large-scale apparatus and elements; and an organic EL element having an electron transporting layer formed by using the same. SOLUTION : This coating fluid for use in the formation of an electron transporting layer of an organic EL element which is laminated on an anode with at least a light-emitting layer, an electron transporting layer and a cathode in this order, includes a predetermined organic compound as an organic semiconductor material, a metal compound capable of releasing to this coating fluid at least one of a metal ion selected from an alkali metal ion, an alkali earth metal ion and a rare earth metal ion, and an organic solvent capable of dissolving the metal compound at an ordinary temperature.
