PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a phosphor having full width at half maximum of emission spectrum of green fluorescence narrower than that of a conventional rare earth-activated sialon phosphor emitting green fluorescence and having an emission spectrum shape well matching the color filter of three primary colors of light; a light emitting device using the phosphor; and an image display device using the light emitting device. SOLUTION : The phosphor is a solid solution of Al and Eu in the crystal of an oxynitride having a β-type Si3N4crystal structure, and an oxygen concentration in the crystal is 0.1 mass% or more and less than 0.4 mass%, while an Eu concentration in the crystal is 0.5-4 mass%.
