PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To efficiently clean an exhaust gas containing a lot of pentanes and CO discharged from a gasoline engine accompanying HCCI combustion.
SOLUTION : An upper layer 43 of an exhaust gas purification catalyst 27 has two upper and lower catalyst layers 42 and contains a Pt component and an Rh component, and a lower layer 44 contains a Pd component. A Pt/Pd mass ratio in the catalyst layer 42 is 10/45 or more and 25/45 or less, a Pt/Rh mass ratio is 2/1 or more and 5/1 or less, and oxide carriers carrying Pt, Rh and Pd respectively are all compound oxide containing rare earth metals.
