PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an aluminum nitride powder having a small Si impurity content, excellent in sinterability, and capable of giving a sintered body with high thermal conductivity, and a method for producing the same.
SOLUTION : A composition containing (a) alumina powder or alumina hydrate powder, (b) carbon powder, (c) a sulfur compound, and (d) an alkaline earth metal compound or a rare earth metal compound capable of melting with alumina at the reduction nitriding temperature is subjected to reduction nitriding at 1, 300-1, 750°C, wherein the composition contains 0.1-3 pts.mass (expressed in terms of sulfur (S)) of the sulfur compound and 0.1-10 pts.mass (expressed in terms of oxide) of the alkaline earth metal compound or rare earth metal compound, relative to 100 pts.mass (expressed in terms of alumina) of the alumina powder or alumina hydrate powder.
