PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a technique impossible for glass and single crystals by applying a polycrystal terbium oxide sintered compact having excellent translucency to a field not applying conventional glass and single crystals only containing terbium oxide partly.
SOLUTION : A translucent terbium oxide sintered compact for magneto-optical elements is a cubic system polycrystal sintered compact whose main ingredient is Tb2O3 and which contains a rare earth element except Tb, has a porosity of 0.2% or less, has an in-line transmittance per 3 mm length of 70% or more at wavelengths of both 1.06 μm and 532 nm, and includes 2×1022 or more Tb3+ ions for 1 cm3.
