PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide glass particles, glass ceramic particles and ceramic particles, which are useful as abrasive particles.SOLUTION : This invention relates to : ceramics (including glasses, crystalline ceramics, and glass-ceramics) that contain AlO, a rare-earth oxide, and ZrO/HfO; and methods of making the same. The AlO, a rare-earth oxide, and ZrO/HfOare melted to be converted into glass beads and glass powder, and then are heated to obtain glass ceramic powder, which is useful for the abrasive particles and the like. The particles can be useful as thermal insulation material, filler, or reinforcing material in composite materials (e.g., ceramic, metal, or polymeric matrix composites) and can be useful as protective coatings in applications involving wear. |
